Natural Welsh Slate
Natural Welsh slate is the premium choice for pitched roofing — a material with a proven track record stretching back centuries. Split from the quarries of North Wales, each slate is a unique piece of natural stone with an unmatched depth of colour and texture. When correctly laid on a properly battened and ventilated roof, natural slate will outlast everything around it.
We source quality Welsh slate and install it to traditional close-nailed or centre-nailed specifications. All slating work includes appropriate underlay, correct head and side laps, and lead soakers and flashings at abutments and valleys as required.
Clay Plain Tiles
Clay plain tiles are the traditional covering for pitched roofs across England, in continuous use for over 500 years. Fired from natural clay, they develop a warm, rich tone that weathers beautifully over time and complements the brickwork of older properties far better than any modern alternative. At 265 × 165mm, they are the smallest standard UK tile profile and require a steep pitch of 35° or more.
We supply and install hand-made and machine-made clay plain tiles from leading manufacturers including Marley, Redland and Dreadnought, and can source reclaimed plain tiles for properties where matching existing work is essential.
Concrete Interlocking Tiles
Concrete interlocking tiles are the most widely used pitched roof covering on UK housing built from the 1960s onwards. Manufactured to a precise profile, each tile hooks over the batten and interlocks with its neighbours, reducing the number of tiles required per square metre and allowing installation at lower pitches than plain tiles. Available in a wide range of profiles and colours, they are durable, readily available and cost-effective.

Reclaimed & Matching Tiles
On older properties — particularly pre-war terraces, Victorian semis and period farmhouses — achieving a seamless visual match after repairs or partial re-roofing requires sourcing reclaimed materials rather than using new tiles. New tiles, even from the same manufacturer, often look noticeably different in colour and texture from weathered existing work. Using reclaimed tiles that have already aged makes a repair invisible from the street.

A tiled roof is only as good as its details. We finish every roof with the correct ridge and verge systems, properly bedded or dry-fixed, and ensure valleys, abutments and any penetrations are sealed with appropriate lead or GRP work.

Traditional cut or swept lead valleys, step and cover flashings, back gutters and soakers — all carried out to BS EN 12588 standards. Lead is the most durable material for roofing details and, installed correctly, will outlast the tiles around it.

How long does a natural slate roof last?
A natural Welsh slate roof correctly installed can last 100 years or more. Many Victorian and Edwardian slate roofs are still performing well today, over a century after laying. The slate itself rarely fails — problems usually arise from fixing nails corroding or from deteriorated underlay, both of which are addressed during a re-roof.
What is the difference between natural slate and fibre cement slate?
Natural slate is quarried stone — extremely durable, each piece unique, and can last 100+ years. Fibre cement (artificial) slate is a manufactured alternative lasting 30–50 years. Natural slate has a superior appearance and longevity but costs more upfront. We supply and install both — we'll advise which makes sense for your property and budget.
Can you match existing tiles on my older property?
Yes. We source reclaimed and matching tiles for older properties where new tiles would look out of place. We can match clay plain tiles, natural slate and many concrete tile profiles through our reclamation yard contacts across the North West. What is a dry ridge system and should I have one?
A dry ridge system mechanically fixes ridge tiles without mortar, eliminating the cracking, loosening and re-pointing that affects traditional bedded ridges every 10–15 years. It is the modern standard and we fit it on all new and re-roof work. If your mortar ridge has failed more than once, upgrading to dry ridge is the permanent solution.
